Austria Skiing all year Round?
Skiing is a winter sport right? well yes but there are opportunities to ski into the winter, spring and even the summer. The skiing won't be as extensive and the weather won't be as cold, but it is certainly possible to ski outside the recognized ski season of mid December to the Easter holidays.
In Austria there are a number of glaciers in the Tyrol, but the only glacier ski area in the Salzburg area is the Kitzsteinhorn above Kaprun close to Zell am See. The facilities on the top of the mountain come newly refurbished with even a cinema complex now added.
Summer Skiing in the Austrian Alps

A place to summer ski is on the Kitzsteinhorn rising to 3203 metres with a glacier so it is possible to extend your ski season and ski on in April, May June and beyond weather dependent further on into the year. In some years weather dependent it is possible to ski most of the year round. In the case of the Kizsteinhorn, it normally shuts down for weeks in the summer when maintenance takes place on relocating the ski lifts which have been sliding down the glacier!

The lifts for skiing at the Kitzsteinhorn are operating all year round - the first ascent is at around 8.15 a.m.
Usually in April almost all lifts are open. In summer generally the main cable-cars and a few ski lifts at
the very top (at approx 2900 metres) of the glacier are operating – approx. 3,5 piste km slopes.
The number of open lifts and pistes is always depending on the actual snow situation.
They cannot give you an exact preview for summer skiing as this is very much weather dependent, its recommended that you contact the Kitzsteinhorn ski lift company direct to get the latest situation

Many spring and summer visitors, like to take up the opportunity of an extended ski season, but they also like the possibility of a combination of activities. Skiing, walking, a round of golf or even two for at the Zell am See, Kaprun golf courses there are two 18 hole championship golf course!
Other possibilities are cycling, swimming in a mountain lake in one of the local spas or pools. In the case of Kaprun and Zell am See there is the new Tauern-Kaprun-Spa world, which opened in November 2010.
In Austria there are 8 glacier ski areas, where it is possible to have an extended ski season.
The majority of of the resorts are in are in the Austrian Tyrol area, with the Kitzsteinhorn being in the Salzburg area, and the Molltaler Gletcher being in Carinthia.

KAPRUN CHEESE FESTIVAL
The Kaprun Cheese festival event is becoming a popular favourite, with blue-veined cheese, cottage cheese or hard cheese. It runs for a full week a very with aromas drifting through the village of streets of Kaprun. Normally it is held held in the middle of September for the cheese connoisseurs , the quiet little village of Kaprun is turning into the longest cheese counter in the Pinzgau!!!. The traditionally popular freash milk product from Pinzgau is at the center of everyone's attention.
A very special experience is guaranteed when 120 years of choir tradition meet the unequalled acoustics of Zell am See town square. The Christmas concert of 'Liedertafel Zell am See' choir in the medieval town square, is supremely atmospheric, and will bring shivers down your spine. THE VOLVO ICE CAMP
It is becoming a regular feature the 'Volvo Ice Camp' it invites visitors to take a look at this amazing igloo world, covering more than 10,000 square metres high up on the Kitzsteinhorn. The main igloo which is twelve metres in diameter and is connected with many other snow huts opens its doors.
Inside the ice bar and ice lounge you can enjoy a cheese fondue, hot tea or perhaps some warming schnapps. Activities include an outside climbing tower, night hiking and various music events in the camp. You can even stay overnight until April, sleeping in one of the cosy and romantic igloos.
KITZSTEINHORN MELLOW PARK
Three top Snowparks at snow guaranteed 2.500 and 2.900 metres - this is a real mecca for snowboarders and free skiers on an area of 30.000 m² and with more than 70 obstacles. More information about every obstacle, the park maps and the actual videos and photos can be foundfreely on the web. The set up change from year to year.
BP hot air balloon trophy competition -end of January Hot Air Ballooning
Floating above snow-covered mountain tops in a basket: By now, the colorful spectacle is already taking place for the 3o something time: more than 35 balloonist teams are starting in the BP Gas Balloon Trophy to show what they can do with their multi-coloured balls of heat in the sky. People who are not satisfied with just watching can climb into one of the baskets themselves to explore every spot of the region from hundreds of meters of altitude. The 'nights of the glowing balloons' are the visual highlights of this week.

Snow Night skiing - Boarding
For about eight weeks Wednesdays are special days for snowboarders and Freeskiers: till middle of March snowboard nights take place every Wednesday from 8 p.m. On the piste at cityXpress, boarders and free skiers are showing their skills with their boards beneath their feet. The snowboard and freestyle show also guarantees breath-taking action. Here spectators can marvel at lots of jumps and stunts. The evening events are completed by music from the DJ and a brilliant fireworks display.
